Millennials have been reconstructing the way organizations operate. Sharing ideas and giving feedback are generational indications of what millennials are accustomed to in their work and social life. One of the key elements for businesses to succeed is to understand how collaboration and communication can enhance the organization's performance.

Perception

According to a study from Stanford, the perception of working together on a task can increase performance and inspire intrinsic motivation. Participants that treated themselves as working together persisted 48-64% longer on a challenging task compared to those that were working separately. More interest was shown for the task which led to better performance.

Collaboration Technologies

Research from McKinsey shows that the average worker spends 28% of their work time on managing emails and 20% looking for internal information and tracking down their teammate's tasks. By making use of collaboration technology, it helps companies achieve the goals and results needed. They help create optimized workflows that improve productivity. Employees can use message-based platforms to conduct discussions, submit work, share updates and review checklists. Hence, more time can be utilized in other work.

Embrace Collaboration Behaviour

While implementing collaboration technologies into business processes is crucial, collaboration behaviours should also be monitored. By shaping collaborative behaviour, businesses encourage transparency, where employees are willing to share their expertise and knowledge to others to facilitate their work to achieve goals.

Knowledge Sharing

Knowledge sharing within an organization can affect the company’s performance. A study from Expert Systems with Applications reports that "knowledge sharing not only have a positive relationship with performance directly but also influence innovation which in turn contributes to firm performance." The study shows that explicit knowledge affects innovation speed and financial performance significantly while tacit knowledge sharing has a larger impact on innovation quality and operational performance.

Collaboration in the workplace should be encouraged since it influences new forms of workflow and business processes. It allows for new potential opportunities to improve organizational efficiencies, decision making and increase the business' performance.
