What does the future hold for educational facilities? Education planners are identifying the necessity for active learning and participation versus traditional lecture-based learning. Institutions are taking down walls and creating environments are sustainable, stimulate collaboration and creativity.

Here are some of the aspects that will affect the future of educational facilities:

Flexible Spaces


Incorporating flexible spaces in schools can help increase active learning, facilitate project-based learning and group work. Flexible spaces do not necessarily follow strictly to the open concept, but it offers efficiency for learning areas that need constant change to support various learning activities. In the long run, it will save cost on remodelling and building new facilities.

Connection to Nature

Education institutions will continue to invest budget into adding gardens in outdoor areas and incorporating living trees or foliage in interior designs. Research has shown that visual access to natural views yields positive psychological outcomes in college classrooms.

Sustainable Practices

While workspaces are implementing sustainable practices, the education sector is also doing the same. The Renton School District in the United States is utilising LED lighting to track energy and water use. The LED lighting changes according to the level of resources being used. Teachers have also noticed that tunable LED lighting in the classroom helped increase students’ focus and concentration.


Artificial intelligence is gradually transforming within the classroom. It is helping learning platforms to improve individualisation through adaptive learning programs and formative feedback. Artificial intelligence can also automate tedious work, such as grading tests. Technology will continue to pioneer the design of new learning spaces as they can facilitate project-based and enquiry-based learning.

While education curriculums may differ, learning environments tend to share similar learning contexts. Learning environments usually consist of social, individual, formal teaching and informal learning processes. It is important for institutions to take account of these aspects when designing future learning spaces.
